Pain Management

Chiropractic is a holistic system of healthcare focused on restoring, preserving, and optimizing health by natural hands-on care.

The spine acts as a protective cage for the spinal cord. All of the nerves in your body, which control everything from muscle function to digestion, originate from the spinal cord. These nerves exit through holes made up by the bones of the spine. When vertebrae are misaligned, they can irritate these spinal nerves as they exit the spine. This irritation can cause localized pain, as well as problems in the area(s) that those nerves travel to.

Remember that nerves control everything in your body, so it is extremely important to have a healthy, functioning nervous system. Chiropractors use their hands to administer an adjustment (a quick and controlled “push”) to the spine in areas where it is not moving properly. By restoring natural motion to the spine, nerve irritation is eliminated and spinal mobility is increased. Chiropractic is safe and effective for all age groups.

Think of all the stress we place on our bodies each day: working at a desk, sitting with poor posture, carrying children, lifting groceries out of the car, cleaning our homes, jogging…the list goes on. It’s no wonder that many of us have aches and pains that stem from spinal imbalances. For patients in pain, chiropractic care can alleviate your pain naturally and prevent it from returning. For patients not currently experiencing pain, chiropractic care will help you maintain spinal mobility, prevent future injuries, and benefit your overall health by allowing your nervous system to function optimally.

Pain Management

Most people think of chiropractors as doctors who treat back problems. While this is true, chiropractic is also a great way to manage many types of pain, including neck pain, sciatica, headaches, fibromyalgia, arthritis, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel, and hip pain.

With today’s growing health care costs, chiropractic care is receiving more widespread attention due to its cost effectiveness. Compared to more expensive and invasive options, such as medication, steroid injections and surgery, chiropractic is a conservative, low cost pain management option. Chiropractic care reduces pain, decreases medication, increases joint mobility, and allows patients to return to the activities they love.

Here are some tips to help prevent pain compiled by the American Chiropractic Association:

  • Maintain a healthy diet and weight.

  • Remain active—under the supervision of your doctor.

  • Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest.

  • Warm up or stretch before exercising or other physical activities, such as gardening.

  • Maintain proper posture.

  • Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.

  • Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize any curve in your spine.

  • Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting.

  • Quit smoking. Smoking impairs blood flow, resulting in oxygen and nutrient deprivation to spinal tissues.

  • Make sure your workstation has proper ergonomics, your doctor of chiropractic can help you with this.

  • Work with your doctor of chiropractic to ensure that your joints are moving properly.

Prenatal Chiropractic

Chiropractic care is an essential part of your pregnancy. Preexisting imbalances in your spine and pelvis become stressed during pregnancy, often causing pain and discomfort. Specific chiropractic adjustments allow your body to adapt to the structural changes that come along with your changing body. Chiropractic care can relieve back pain and discomfort during pregnancy by reducing spinal stress. It is a wonderful, natural addition to your prenatal care.

Chiropractic care also provides comfort for your baby. As your baby develops, your uterus enlarges to accommodate the rapid growth. If your pelvis is unbalanced during pregnancy, the ligaments that hold your uterus in place can become torqued and twisted, a condition known as intrauterine constraint. This constraint limits the space of the developing baby and prevents the baby from getting into the best possible position for birth. This can slow labor, add pain and distress to mom and baby, and lead to unnecessary interventions, such as pitocin, episiotomies, vacuum extraction, and even c-sections.

Chiropractic care will restore balance to your pelvis, leading to a safer and easier delivery for you and your baby.

Dr. Marla is one of the few chiropractors in Charlotte, NC who is certified in Webster Technique, a chiropractic analysis and adjustment technique which improves the bio-mechanical function of the pelvis and decreases intrauterine constraint during pregnancy. This will allow for a faster, safer and more natural birth for mom and baby. Visit the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association website for more information on chiropractic care and pregnancy.

Pediatric Chiropractic

Chiropractic care for children offers your family a solid foundation for wellness. As children grow, it is essential for them to have proper spinal and nervous system function. Like adults, children have a great deal of stress placed on their spine which can lead to spinal misalignments. The birth process itself can be traumatic on an infant’s spine. As children learn to walk, they take many tumbles. During childhood, kids often play rough with friends, fall on the playground or sustain sports injuries. Chiropractic will correct these misalignments and allow your children to grow up with a healthy spine and nervous system.

Research has shown that chiropractic care is safe and effective for children. Unexpected benefits of chiropractic care for children were also noted:

  1. Improved sleeping

  2. Improved behavior and attitude

  3. Improved immune system function

Visit the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association website for more information on chiropractic care for children and research studies.
