The Link Between Vitamin D + Immunity

Vitamin D is a necessary nutrient for a number of bodily functions, especially for the immune system. This vitamin contains both anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory properties that activate the immune system defenses and strengthen the function of immune cells.

Evidence is showing that maintaining healthy levels of vitamin D can keep your immune system strong and protect you from infections, disease, immune-related or cognitive disorders, and respiratory diseases, including COVID. There is also a link between vitamin D deficiency and decreased lung function, making it difficult to fight against respiratory infections. There was a study done with hospitalized COVID patients who had healthy vitamin D levels, which lowered their risk of adverse symptoms and death. Although there is no scientific cure for COVID, studies have shown the positive effect of taking a daily vitamin D supplement.


Cytokines are proteins that have both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties which play an integral role in a healthy immune system. However, when the body has low vitamin D levels, a “cytokine storm” can arise. This process refers to the uncontrolled release of pro-inflammatory cytokines that respond to an infection in the body. This release of cytokines can cause serious tissue damage and encourage the progression of diseases.

Overall vitamin D is definitely a great addition to your supplement regime for a healthy bodily function and strong immune system. Be sure your vitamin D supplement contains vitamin K2 so your body is more susceptible to absorption. In addition, I highly recommend checking your vitamin D levels 1-2 times a year for optimal health.
