Supplements Don't Work

Walking down the supplement aisle at your local health food store, it's easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. Vitamins, minerals, herbs, and proprietary blends all competing for attention, each claiming they can boost your health, balance your hormones, sharpen your mind, and more. With enticing promises like these, it's tempting to load your shopping basket with bottles, hoping one (or a potent combination) will be the golden ticket to your health goals.

However, many people find that supplements don't work as universally or effectively as advertised. You faithfully take your multivitamin, fish oil, and turmeric every day and still don’t feel quite yourself. Why is that? The answer ties back to the fact that supplementation is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. There are several key reasons why supplements fall short for so many people:

Individual Biochemical Differences

Each of us has a unique biochemistry influenced by genes, diet, lifestyle habits, health conditions, prescription medications, and environmental exposures. These variables impact nutrient absorption, utilization, and needs at the individual level. For example, certain genetic mutations can inhibit the metabolism of key vitamins like folate and a dose of a standard supplemental dose may be ineffective for a specific person.

Imbalances and Deficiencies General

Many multivitamin formulas do not address the specific deficiencies or imbalances you may have with key nutrients like magnesium, iron, or B12. Some people unknowingly take supplements that further exacerbate a deficiency. For example, overly supplementing with calcium can inhibit magnesium absorption and overwhelm an already low level.

Drug Interactions

Supplement-drug interactions can also render ingredients ineffective or even potentially harmful when taken together. For example, St John’s wort interferes with a wide range of pharmaceutical medications by speeding up the breakdown process. That is why it is important to always check with your doctor about possible interactions if you are taking medications.

Poor Quality and Absorption Issues

The sad truth is that the vast majority of vitamins sitting on store shelves lack the proper quality controls and formulation required to grant you the expected benefits. Mediocre ingredients, improper manufacturing processes, and unsuitable delivery methods (like hard-to-digest capsules) mean you are paying for glorified pill fillers. Just because it says "natural" or caters to a health buzzword doesn't mean it will work as advertised.

In addition to ingredient and delivery limitations with store-bought supplements, many people lack sufficient stomach acid and digestive enzymes required to properly break down and absorb capsule forms of key nutrients like iron and B12. No matter how great the supplement is, it cannot correct health issues if you cannot properly digest or metabolize it from the digestive tract into cellular absorption.

Inappropriate Doses

When taking supplements, you still may not experience the benefits if the doses fail to align with your unique physiology and needs. Supplement labels universally provide oddly precise Recommended Daily Allowances for key nutrients - but these generic allowances fail to account for individual deficiencies, metabolic issues, prescription interactions, and health conditions warranting higher or lower nutrient needs. Only by assessing your functional biomarkers and profiles can your optimal dose become clear.

While vitamins and supplements undoubtedly play an important supporting role on the path to optimal health, they do not represent a cure-all or magic bullet. So where does that leave you in your quest to find the right supplements to meet your individual needs?

Personalization is the Key

Rather than wasting money and time randomly trying supplements until you find the right fit, consider investing in comprehensive personalized testing and expert guidance tailored specifically to your biochemistry.

Sophisticated lab analysis can pinpoint specifics about your metabolism, hormonal markers, and much more to make the most accurate recommendations. This ‘under the hood’ insight allows us to make targeted suggestions about your diet, lifestyle tweaks, and supplement recommendations catered to your unique physiology.

Targeted precision stands the best chance of moving the needle on your health and wellness goals rather than the outdated one-size-fits-all approach.
