The TRUTH about Alkaline Water? | Is it GOOD or BAD?!

Alkaline water is water that is altered so that the pH is increased. The pH is measured on a scale of 0 to 14 where zero is most acidic and 14 is least acidic or most alkaline. The pH scale is actually based on the acidity of normal drinking water which is assigned a neutral pH of 7. The proponents of alkaline water claim that disease thrives in acidic environments so drinking water that is less acidic i.e more alkaline can combat the acidity in the body. The problem with this school of thought is, the body is very dynamic and it has extensive, sophisticated, biological buffering systems that resist changes in pH. Added to that, different areas in the body operate optimally at different pH levels so alkalizing the pH of the body is not only impossible, it would be unwise. Drinking alkaline water does alter the pH of the stomach however, because it comes into direct contact with the stomach contents but that is as far as it goes. Consuming alkaline water can definitely cause digestion issues and reflux because the stomach needs to be acidic in order to break down food and release necessary nutrients. However, by the time that water mixes with the stomach contents and passes through to the small intestines, the buffering system in the body corrects the pH to whatever it needs to be. The body, in its infinite wisdom controls it's own pH and luckily for us, we don't need to do anything to manipulate it!
