Sunscreen or No Sunscreen?

I am Dr. Parkes and this channel is dedicated to answering your health questions. I am a licensed, board certified Naturopathic Physician. I run an online clinic where I help people get their bodies balanced without using drugs or surgery in a natural, holistic way.

The sun is the ultimate source of light and energy. Without the sun, there would be no life on earth as we know it. The sun provides us with warmth and it helps plants to grow so we can have food. Direct sun exposure also helps us to make vitamin D, which is actually not a vitamin (it was misnamed), but a hormone that is responsible for many vital functions in the body. Overexposure to the sun can cause as many problems as too little sun exposure. Also, the darker your complexion and the more easily you tan, the more sun exposure you need to make vitamin D. There are definitely smart ways to get the sunshine you need while protecting your skin from damage. One way is using a natural sunscreen strategically.
